Life Moments

There are times in our lives when most of us turn to God specifically to thank him or to help us through a difficult time. Sometimes these are happy occasions when we are keen to celebrate our joy with God and others.

For many this starts with the birth of a child and the act of baptising him or her into the Christian faith. As we grow, many Christians choose to make the same promises made for them when they were babies to follow in the life of Jesus Christ and become confirmed Christians. When the time comes the vast majority of us want God to be present when we agree to marry the person we love.

At other times we turn to God when things get tough with work, family, relationships, illness and none more painful than to lose those we cherish most in life. We need God to tell us that everything will be alright.

You can find out more about how St John's can help you through these times - the good and the bad - in this section. Our commitment to you is lifelong.

Getting Married

Congratulations on your forthcoming marriage. It’s a very exciting time and we’d like to share it with you.

You're welcome to marry in any church whether or not you are baptised and whether or not you go to church regularly although you’ll need to check that you are able to be married in St John’s by understanding the recent changes in the law.

The wedding is just one day whilst the marriage should be for life. The marriage vows are important and to prepare for this we support our couples as they get ready. To learn more, see our marriage preparation page.

For such a special day, we offer a beautiful church at St John’s. Please visit our commonly asked question page for more details about getting married at St John's.

For more general information and to help you plan a personal, meaningful, spiritual and beautiful church wedding can be found on the Church of England’s web site www.yourchurchwedding.org.

We look forward to sharing in your day.

Baptism

As a parent, baptism can be seen as a public thanking of God for this gift of life but it is so much more than this: it is the decision that you have taken to support your child on their journey of faith and the asking of the Church for its support.  For your child, baptism is the start of that journey in turning away from sin and accepting God’s offer of a new start. Many people are baptised as children, but there are also many who make this public commitment of faith as adults.

The promises made at a baptism service are very important and whether making these as parents or godparents on behalf of the child or for yourself in adult baptism, you’ll be supported as your prepare for these. At a later stage, the child may choose to be confirmed and make the promises themselves to turn away from sin and turn towards Christ.

For some parents, whilst they want to thank God for the gift of their child, they do not feel that the baptism service is for them and we are pleased to also offer a Thanksgiving Service for such families.

Read our Baptism Service page for more information and read through our commonly asked questions.
